Want to have a go at glass blowing? This courses is a great introduction to the art. In a small group of people, you will be shown how to correctly and safely handle hot glass and the techniques for creating your own drinking vessel.

With expert tuition from glass artist Charlotte Hughes Martin, you will make your very own hand blown glass. Maybe get some friends and family to join you and make a day of it. The class is made even more enjoyable simply by the setting inside the wonderful Red House Glass Cone. You could have lunch sitting by the canal or try our on site cafe. Take a walk around the beautiful historic building and visit the numerous other craft studios on site.

All materials and tools will be provided. No previous knowledge required. Please ensure you wear fully closed shoes and practical clothing.

Printmaking Workshop

This fantastic print making workshop is run at the wonderful Ruskin Craft Centre. You can choose from 5 print disciplines; linocut, engraving, dry-point, mono-type and collagraph.

Saturdays, 10.30am – 4pm.

Artist Mike Allison has a printmaking workshop at the Ruskin Craft Centre. He specialises in relief printmaking, in particular engraving and linocuts. He also offers tuition in collagraph, drypoint and monotype.

Mike has exhibited his prints widely and is a past chair of Birmingham printmakers.  He is currently working on 100 views of Birmingham, using a combination of relief printmaking techniques.
Mike offers workshops to groups of two people at a time on Saturdays. The sessions are from 10.30am – 4pm and cost £110 for the session (1 person is £110, two people pay £55 each). Participants can choose from linocut, engraving, dry-point, mono-type and collagraph. Please get in touch here to arrange a Saturday that suits.

Fused Glass Workshops

Jane Ellis runs fused glass taster workshops between 10-4 full day and 1pm – 4pm half day.  These sessions are for beginners. You don’t need to have ever cut a piece of glass to attend. Jane will talk you through all the processes needed to create your own unique piece of glass.

You can either make one of your own creations into a wall hanger, make a set of 2 coasters a small dish, or follow one of the pre created projects if you need a little help. If there is time you can also use some of the off cuts to make a necklace.

The sessions are for one or two people (one ticket per person) so the tuition is very focused on you and what you want to achieve in the time. A larger group can be catered for but please contact us with details.

The class is made even more enjoyable simply by the setting. The Glass Quarter Designs studio is well equipped, and has an inspiring, creative atmosphere and of course is based at the wonderful Red House Glass Cone. You could have lunch sitting by the canal or try our on site cafe. Take a walk around the beautiful historic building and visit the numerous other craft studios on site.

Glass Techniques Day

Join fused glass artist Jane Ellis and lamp-work glass artist Sarah Cordingley for a wonderfully creative and fun filled day at the Cone.

You will spend half the day learning how to make glass beads and the other half learning fused glass techniques. You will come away with a beautiful pieces of jewellery and a fused glass pieces you’ll be proud of.

Lamp-work glass – Sarah will teach you the basic techniques needed to create glass beads. You will have a large choice of colours and one to one tuition, insuring you come away with a piece of jewellery you are sure to be thrilled with.

Fused Glass – Jane will walk you through the skills needed to create your own unique piece of glass. You can make either a wall hanger, set of coasters or a dish. Jane will show you how to cut break and layer the sheet glass in order to make your ideas come to life.

Fused Glass Picture Workshop

Fancy getting creative with glass in a fun and relaxed environment? Whether you have had a go at fused glass art before or are a complete beginner, this workshop is a great way to learn a variety of glass fusing techniques and to meet some new creative people, come along and make a beautiful fused glass picture to be proud of.

During the session we will discuss and design your ideas, create the background using glass powders frits and metals. We will then use coloured glass, specialist equipment including lampwork torches, and taught techniques to bring your pictures to life.

You will be shown how to safely use the tools and equipment and then it’s over to you (along with help and advice along the way) to turn your ideas into art!

​The courses are held on the site of the Red House Glass Cone, near Stourbridge in the heart of the Glass Quarter. You can spend some time looking around the site, glass blowing demonstrations are held weekend afternoons. There is also a coffee shop on site but tea and coffee will be provided.

​Your pieces will need to fired over night, but will be available for collection a few days after the course. Or they can be posted for a small additional postage fee.
